traffic lights….

let’s face it – it’s not a stressful commute on the roads of north uist.

Occasionally you meet a car or two and have to make use of the plentiful passing places. Sometimes if you time it wrong you can meet the ferry traffic  and have to wait for 10 or 15 cars to pass. Often you know the person in the passing car. Sometimes there are sheep on the road, and sometimes birds of prey.

But for the last few weeks we’ve had to add traffic lights to our encounters. Generally they turn green as you approach them, but if not then often a man pops out from behind a digger and waves you on anyway.

Southern trains it is not….

polycrub

we’ve got a new comunity polycrub on berneray – it’s a super stong polytunnel – desinged and developed in shetland specifically to resist island weather.  http://www.nortenergy.co.uk/design/

we had a manure shovelling meeting yesterday, as well as some thoughts on seeds and tools that we will need.

looking forward to tomatos, french beans, chillis, and cucumbers in longer days

november visitors

caroline gets star points for most consistant november visitor

we:

  • circumnavigated Berneray in thick fog – lucky it’s tricky to get lost.
  • climbed a hill on a sparkling day – and had a binoculargate incident
  • traversed bog, moor, and hill to the centre of the island to find a 5,000 year old chambered cairn where  we found foxgloves and saw one golden eagle 3 times, or perhaps 3 golden eagles….
